What to Wear to a Graduation Ceremony
Words by: Esther Achara . Design by: Melanie Makariou
Now that your loved ones have made it through the 8-semester grind, what should you wear to their graduation ceremony? Your outfit’s tone depends on a number of factors: are you heading to an indoor auditorium, with the AC blasting, or will you be guided outside to bask in the sun? Since some events lean more formal than others, peelable layers are a failsafe A+ formula.
From one-and-done jumpsuits to classic floral dresses, modern matching sets to summer takes on tailoring, the six graduation outfits below were compiled with your personal style in mind, and to effortlessly take you from the ceremony to a celebratory lunch.
A Printed Dress
If a slip dress is your usual go-to, this fit-and-flare maxi is a solid choice. Since most graduations take place in springtime, florals can be the default; an abstract botanical in an uplifting palette conveys the same idea but with a thoughtful edge. Fluid and elegant, this summer-y frock is crafted from crease-resistant viscose so you can focus on the celebration, without worrying your look is fading. Contrasting graphic accessories and blocky footwear keeps your outfit entirely of the moment.
A Matching Set
If this graduation is just one of many impending smart-casual spring events, then a matching set is a good place to start. Crafted from an Italian linen blend that looks more like tweed, this textural wide-leg-pant-and-bomber-jacket ensemble is a failsafe way to look polished. Summer wedding to follow? Throw the jacket over a silk maxi dress for a cool take on a more elevated look. Thinking about fall getaways? It’s also perfect with jeans. Once you get started, the possibilities, it seems, are endless.
A Maxi Skirt
When a dress feels too much and a jumpsuit feels too casual, make a sweeping maxi skirt your go-to. Spun from a stretchy summer knit, woven with glimmering metallic threads, it comes into its own in AC-filled rooms. Contrast the heavier texture with a drapey silk tank and ground it all with graphic sandals and a chunky necklace. If head-to-toe coordination is more your thing, switch this tank for a striped knitted version that matches your skirt.
A Summer Suit
When the ceremony leans more formal, summer tailoring gives you the perfect balance of polished and cool. Replace your usual blazer with a pinstripe, wrap-over vest with a V-shaped neckline. It will work equally well, with or without a tank underneath. Matching tapered pants keep the look form-fitting and flattering, while statement sandals soften the overall effect. Turns out tailoring isn’t just for business majors.
A Shirtdress
Since there’s no scenario a well-made shirtdress can’t handle, consider this the valedictorian of graduation outfits. Casual event? Pair yours with sneakers. Heading to a more formal affair? Add pointed flats or even heels. Side note: mixing prints will up your outfit grading. Just stick to the classics—solid stripes and muted snake prints are ideal. Combining the lapels of a suit with the effortless flow of a summer celebration, it will travel from the boardroom to a beachside cafe. Streamlined and timeless, it’s the wardrobe must-have with the brightest future.
A Jumpsuit
Overthinking? Don’t know it. This one-and-done jumpsuit takes the guesswork out of graduation dressing. Built around the idea of summer-ready culottes, it exudes the sophistication of classic tailoring with carefree confidence. Made from lightweight, crease-less linen in a cropped length, the collared neckline adds a little gravitas, rendering it perfect for these smart-casual proceedings. Double down on that idea with graphic sandals, and contrast its dark hue with playfully printed accessories; a leopard-print belt subtly adds print without it feeling overpowering.
