What to Wear for the Kentucky Derby

There are few style arenas quite as storied or exuberant as the Kentucky Derby. By the time the 152nd running arrives this May, the grounds of Churchill Downs will transform into a kaleidoscope of color by way of the attendees’ statement hats and floral dresses. If that dress code is a little out of your wheelhouse, don’t despair. Dressing for the occasion is about striking a balance between polish, playfulness, and a look that’s entirely your own.
Set in Louisville, the Run for the Roses leans into a polished Southern sensibility. So, while jumpsuits and pantsuits aren’t entirely off-limits, they do run the risk of reading as too casual. Instead, dresses are the uniform of choice. Think hemlines below the knee, shoulder straps that stretch beyond an inch in width, and tones inspired by spring.
Consider this your starting point for race-day dressing and discover the best look for you ahead.
A LACE MAXI
Since linen creases faster than a thoroughbred can shoot out the gate, opt for a stretchier fabric with more movement. This sweeping maxi dress, crafted from supersoft woven viscose, offers a body-skimming fit, while the two-tone lace overlay adds a timeless touch. It goes without saying that midriffs should be covered, which is why classic dresses work best. A high neckline, like the one here, offers a modern touch while its capped flutter sleeves keep things firmly in the realm of tradition. Keep your look grounded—and easy to walk in—with solid, low-heel sandals and top it all off with a pair of chic, metal-frame aviators.
A GARDEN PRINT
Floral prints are a Derby favorite, but if your aim isn’t to look like everyone else, finding the right one requires a little thought. Steer clear of floriferous cliches with a sparse tulip-inspired print in near-clashing shades of reddish pink. More than a slip dress, but following the same rules, this bias-cut maxi hugs in all the right places and is perfectly accented with a pretty, draped neckline. Keep in mind that each guest is permitted one bag no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″, and since clutches can be tricky to carry, a small one like this, with its elongated strap, is ideal.
A CLEAN NEUTRAL
If the idea of prints makes you want to spin out, revert to a light pastel or neutral-toned dress. An alabaster fit-and-flare silhouette like this one, with its stretch-infused modal jersey bodice and cotton-poplin skirt, emits steady confidence and clarity while fitting with Race Day’s uplifting theme. Moreover, a neutral foundation allows you to go a little wild on the headwear front or bolder with your accessories. A dark animal print shoe or speckled scarf wrapped around a ponytail offers an idiosyncratic touch that’s perfectly aligned with Derby's ladylike mood. Do that, and like a true style jockey, you’ll have nailed the apex.
AN ARTFUL FLORAL
Ankle-baring dresses fall well within the mid-calf expectancy range, and balancing out a fuller skirted silhouette with a deep V-neckline adds a modern touch. This artfully embroidered abstract-printed dress, cut from a jacquard jersey on a candy-coral backdrop, is the epitome of femininity and nods to the event’s springtime traditions while transporting it into the present. These chic flat sandals with an asymmetric design are still elevated enough in execution to pass the event’s dress code while ensuring you navigate the lawns with ease.
HEADWEAR
From feathered fascinators to colorful, wide-brimmed hats, a statement topper is as much a part of the Kentucky Derby as the winner’s garland of roses. There’s a long-standing idea that the taller the hat, the higher the social standing, but these days, the rules feel far more relaxed. Prefer a quieter approach? Consider a modern pillbox shape or textured raffia style. And if you’d rather sidestep the hat tradition entirely, a silk scarf tied around an updo can feel just as considered. The only real guideline worth keeping in mind: the more dramatic the hat, the simpler the rest of your outfit should be.
