September marks the start of the ballet season, from London to Manchester to New York City. And contrary to popular belief, there’s no strict dress code, meaning you’ll see all manner of outfits across tuxes + gowns to just-left-the-office ensembles, which opens the door to get as dressed up or down as you’d like. So, whether you’re a seasoned balletomane or this is your first time enjoying a performance, explore our 'What to Wear' guide to plan a look that’s en pointe, from black tie formal to work-to-stalls appropriate.
Dress Circle Dressing
If there was ever a time to go all out with your look, it’s for the Dress Circle. Since its name derives from the 'dressy' formal attire historically chosen by its patrons, an elegant gown or precise tailoring is the perfect choice.

Tailoring comes in all shapes + textures this season. For the classic three-piece suit we’ve chosen rich Bordeaux Red and classic Italian wool-blend tailoring fabric. The Sharp Shoulder Blazer + Tailored Waistcoat are designed to fit perfectly together, while the choice of trouser shapes - tapered or slim-crop - means you can create a borderline-bespoke finish.

Or try our take on the classic smoking jacket. Part of the silk-blend velvet capsule, this Double Espresso deconstructed blazer delivers a softer, more relaxed fit, complete with an optional chain-link fastening for a subtle luxe touch. Build the full look with the matching draped-neck halter top and your choice of coordinating trousers.

Formal dressing comes effortlessly courtesy of this season’s dresses, jumpsuits and co-ord options. Clever fabrics like the embroidered tulle top + maxi skirt or fluid velvet gowns mean you’ll remain comfortable and crease-free during the performance, while contemporary shapes like the Black Tie Jumpsuit assure an elevated look with a modern edge.
Modern Formal
If you want to dress up without committing to a full gown or head-to-toe tailoring, then breaking up your look through modern layers and shapes is key.

Clean-cut, boxy tailoring is an instant win for creating an elevated look with a fresh twist. Look to the Oversized Blazer in black or grey, or for an androgynous look without the oversized cut, try the Longline Fitted Blazer. Tailoring top layer secured, build out the look with a tactile bottom half like the full-length satin skirt or wide-leg leather trousers.
Office-To-Stalls Ease
A weekday performance means straight from the office to a pre-theatre dinner and then to the box office. So you need a hard-working look that covers all the bases.

Tailoring balanced with a tank top or tee is a smart-casual office outfit formula that never misses, and it also works for a weeknight show. Look to timeless pinstripes in the Chocolate + Caramel suit, or mix and match by swapping the trousers for a super-soft washed cord option with the Wide Engineered Trouser.

The solution to practical desk-to-dinner dressing? Innovative fabrics like our fluid crepe, which has a more crease-resistant finish for all-day polish. The Scattered Wild Poppy print maxi dress has a rich Bordeaux palette that adds to its after-dark appeal, while clever ruching at the neck and down the sides delivers a flattering finish. Complete the look with tonal accessories: the Stretch Knee Boot and Pouch Bag.
Sunday Matinee
For a matinee performance, think relaxed Sunday dressing, with a polished edge.

Smart denim like our Every-Wear Baggy Jean and a timeless cashmere knit like the Straight Vest are a versatile base for dressing up and down, not to mention well-equipped for a morning or afternoon of activities before or after your showing. Adding a tailored top layer meets the needs for warmth, and choosing a style like our Boyfriend Blazer adds a statement edge too.
Outfit Finales
Whether you’re opting for a black tie look or utilising last-minute tickets, choose the right accessories to take your look to the next level.
