Jockey Rachael Blackmore On Ascot, Retirement + What’s Next

Words by: Sabina Siemicka. Design by: Melanie Makariou

No one knows more about achieving a lot in a short space of time than a sports champion. With a whole delicious summer of sport ahead, we decided that now was the time to quiz some of our favourite female sports icons to get to the heart of their success as fast as possible. In The Time Trial, these women have sixty seconds to share their wisdom before racing off to their next achievement.

Ahead of Royal Ascot this week, first out of the gate is jockey Rachael Blackmore. Before retiring last month, Blackmore trailblazed her way to a lot of firsts, most notably as the first female jockey to win the Grand National in its 182-year history. She was also the first woman to be leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with a mere six victories and in 2021 was named BBC World Sport Star of the Year. Here she talks about success, failure and what’s next.

And they’re off…

What's your go-to song for a motivational boost?

Old Thing Back.

What does power dressing look like to you?

This red ensemble.

Do you ever give a horse a pep talk before a race?

No, I give them pat maybe sometimes. Maybe that’s a secret pep talk.

If you had to name a racehorse, what would it be?

Stairs – it’s the first thing I can see here!

What's the biggest surprise you had in your career so far?

Winning The Grand National.

What's the one goal you want to achieve next?

I’m retired, so I need to get a job!

How many times do you hit the snooze button?

I don't hit the snooze button at all.

What are your predictions for Ascot?

I don’t know what’s gonna win at Ascot!

What do you think has been the secret to your success?

Fast horses.

What's the thing you miss least about competing?

It’s sport, so the bad days, not winning.

If you could be the first person in the world to achieve something, what would it be?

Ooh, this has slowed me down. Become a trillionaire. Is there such thing?

Favourite board game?

Monopoly.

What's the one go-to for a confidence boost?

Friends and family, they're the best for a confidence boost.

If you didn't end up a jockey, what do you think you'd be?

Still trying to get into college to be a vet?

What's the one thing you do miss about competing?

Winning.

What do you think has been your secret to your success?

Very good horses.

Go-to post-race meal?

Love all food. A steak. Gorge.

Who's the best person you've ever watched in a race?

Ruby Walsh.

How do you pick yourself up after a loss?

Try not to overthink it, and possibly chocolate.

And that’s time.
