Your Guide To Mastering Transeasonal Dressing
Words by: Isla Philo. Design by: Melanie Makariou
Transeasonal dressing is often the Marmite of your wardrobe: you either love it or you hate it. Waking up to crisp, cooler mornings that give way to warm afternoons means you need adaptable pieces that you can add or remove at will – without worrying about sheerness or coverage concerns – and buildable solutions for warmth without weight or bulk.
The New Layering Icon
This season, our latest layering hero is the Cloud Layering Shirt. Aptly named after its lightweight, semi-sheer cotton voile fabric, it works as a standalone style or under co-ordinating knitwear. There are four shades, and a perfect pairing knit solution to go with every style.
The Faux-Layer Base
The faux-layer base is the cheat code item if you love the effortless put-together look of layering, but don’t want to wear multiple pieces. Super-soft fabrics like wool or cotton-blend jersey ensure a comfortable feel against the skin, whether you’re wearing them as a standalone style or as a light layer under tailoring or jackets.
The Essential Vest
Truly an essential in your year-round wardrobe: the knit vest. The key to perfecting this style is proportion. A more relaxed fit gives you room for layers when you want them – like over a crisp white shirt – or a just-slouchy-enough look when styled alone. And the way we see it, there’s no point creating a knit vest without the dedicated layers to wear underneath it. This season’s perfect pairings include high-neck cashmere vests, paired with tonal, barely-there base layers.
Intelligent Pairings
More than just two styles that work together, there’s a lot of thought and planning that goes into taking it from a matching set to a perfect pairing.
Take the scallop knit co-ord pieces, for instance. The slim knit tee is crafted from a lightweight, lofty knit and has a slightly open-work texture that speaks to late-summer, early-autumn styling. Add the matching cardigan and triangle scarf, and you’ve got layers that provide buildable warmth well into the colder seasons.
This season we’ve solved one of the most common layering dilemmas by making the perfectly scaled tee to wear under knitwear. To combat excess fabric around the collar or hemline, we created the Shrunken Layering Tee and Relaxed Crop Jumper, which layer together flawlessly so you see just the right amount of white peeking from underneath.
Barely There Base
Named after its supersoft, lightweight construction, new additions to our Barely There range have a colour and silhouette for every preference. Superfine merino + cashmere creates a light, breathable knit texture that makes the Barely There crew neck top an ideal base or even thermal layer in the colder months. Styles like the Barely There Jumper, Cardigan, or Baby Tee have white trim to create a layered look without the added bulk.
Indoor-Outdoor Jackets
The solution for navigating cooler mornings, warm afternoons and icy office A.C. is the indoor-outdoor jacket. We’re heroing the pieces that work as a jacket when layered over a vest, tee or shirt, but you can still wear them indoors without giving off ‘I’m not staying’ energy.
