How To Wear Knitwear In Every Setting

Words by: Isla Philo. Design by: Melanie Makariou

In The Knitwear Library, we’re taking you through our signature + new knit silhouettes and breaking down how to style them for every setting, from day-to-night to week-to-weekend.

Everyday Layering

Knitwear and layering will always go hand in hand as an everyday solution. To keep things interesting, this season we’ve added luxurious tactility to the mix by reimagining signature silhouettes in brushed cashmere. The Baby Tee and High Neck Vest are an effortless way to add texture to your look, especially when you clash them with your base layer. Whether it’s a minimal, lightweight option like the Barely There Top in merino and cashmere, or something more detailed like a blouse with a matching tie such as the Straight Blouse in fluid silk satin. You can drape the tie around your neck for added interest, and the matching elasticated armbands let you set the sleeves at the perfect length, with the perfect scrunch.

Or, look to an old faithful like our signature Layering Tops. A soft jersey body creates a smooth, comfortable layer between you and the knit, and the details stay where they matter most, like lace-trimmed cuffs and collars, voluminous semi-sheer sleeves, and delicate embroidered cutouts.

The Modern Evening Look

Knitwear might not be your initial thought for post-5 pm styling, but when it’s done right, it’s the perfect choice for the winter months. It can be as simple as swapping your usual under-blazer layers for something like the Draped Neck Tee, crafted from a slinky silk knit. Or use one of our favourite styling techniques: the texture clash, our first choice for evening knitwear styling, with proportion coming in a close second.

Take the Ultimate Boyfriend Jumper, for instance. Brushed cashmere pairs perfectly with satin, but because the shape is relaxed on top, the bottom should be streamlined, so look for something slim and streamlined like the Bias Full Length Skirt. It’s the simple act of removing the base layer from under a V-neck that instantly gives it an evening-ready edge. If you want to add something back to the neckline, opt for the Layered Transformer Necklace; if you want to pin the jumper in just the right gathered spot, use the Crystal Knot Brooch. And if you’re concerned about the knitwear-on-bare-skin feeling, then add the Base Layer Cami as an invisible first layer.

Another PM-ready texture clash we’ll never tire of is knitwear + leather. With proportion in mind, start with a strong trouser shape like a Barrel or the Wide-Leg Track Pant, both crafted from supersoft, supple leather, which makes the ideal elevated base for a more fitted top like the High Neck Baby Tee in brushed cashmere.

The Go-To Icon

Under tailoring, with your athleisure, as an extra in-flight layer, the styling possibilities of the Icon Hoodie are endless, which is why it gets its own section in the knitwear library. Crafted from super-soft cashmere, it adds extra warmth while staying light enough to layer, and the double-zip front lets you create a customised fit that adapts to different trouser waistbands.

Classic + Cosy Weekends

For a cosy winter weekend, slipping into something comfortable means chunky knits, fluffy textures, and reimagined classic patterns.

Argyle and Fair Isle remain heroes this season, although we’ve given them a respin with new palettes and intelligent details. From soft Smoke Pink cashmere to brushed versions in darker Charcoal + Pecan, there’s an Argyle colour combination to suit every preference and skin tone. And it doesn’t stop at jumpers; if you want to test drive the pattern before committing to a full look, there are socks and Triangle Scarves.

For Fair Isle, we’re honouring the Scottish pattern's storied heritage with chunkier yarns that give a more artisanal feel. An alpaca blend gives the Relaxed Sweater a soft and fluffy feel that isn’t too wispy, while the jacquard-knit pieces that include a Vest + Snood and a Relaxed Cardigan come in a soft, merino blend with a two-tone finish.

Not Just Jumpers

And as we promised at the start, the knitwear edit goes well beyond sweaters. Modern evening dresses like the Port Brown Fit + Flare Maxi feature elongating metallic stripes and a soft stretch-knit texture, while classic shift silhouettes are reimagined in tactile bouclé in a monochrome palette elevated by gold lurex.

Co-ord separates like the Slim Knit Top and matching skirt deliver a full, statement look in half the time and an easy-to-style metallic-neutral palette. Perfect pairings get a distinct PM-ready reimagining with the lace-trim cami top, skinny scarf and the matching cardigan, all crafted from fluffy brushed cashmere.

Finishing Touches

Turn to triangle scarves, knitted hoods, or silk-knit scarves to add a touch of knit texture to your look.
