We’re obsessed with style solutions. Creating clothes that solve problems and ensure you look great in the process is our modus operandi.
This week, we celebrate the launch of our new, luxe Guernsey jumper. A modern take on a wardrobe classic, this jumper is crafted from the softest merino wool you can fathom and is finished with a clever button feature at the shoulder. Not a traditional detail of a Guernsey jumper, this is a contemporary update that means you can wear this piece all year round. Button all the way up for a high, cosy polo neck that will keep you warm in deepest winter; unbutton for a relaxed open collar that can be layered over an outfit in summer.
But what we love most about the Guernsey jumper is that it is the very symbol of style solutions. Far surpassing the trench coat and even the Breton, the Guernsey jumper laid the groundwork for the term ‘fashion meets function’.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, the Guernsey jumper gets its name from its hometown. As seafarers from this Channel Island prepared to head out on their ships, they needed something that would keep them warm and dry, and would still allow them to move around unimpeded. Thus, the Guernsey jumper was born, woven with an innovative, ultra-tight weave that would repel water.
Hand-made by women, what made Guernsey jumpers distinctive was the stitched detailing. The raised stitch at the shoulder represents the rope on a ship, other stitches representing waves, ropes and pebbles. Different families had their own unique designs, primarily for the rather morbid reason that it would help identify unfortunate sailors thrown overboard.
Centuries later, from sailors to royalty to fashionistas, the Guernsey jumper has proven its worth as a wardrobe staple. Thanks to the creativity and ingenuity of those women, we can all revel in the delights of this established style solution.
