Breton Birthday Party

We had to celebrate fashion’s favourite top: The Breton is 100 years old!

There are few fashion pieces that have achieved greater status over the last century, that better express timeless chic and genius design than the Breton Top. Ageless, classless, sexless, the Breton is now exactly 100 years old! Inspired by the jerseys worn by Breton fishermen, Coco Chanel launched her own version of the Breton Top in her Deauville boutique 1917.

Since then, the top has been reinvented again and again and yet retains the simplicity and beauty of the original. It’s the top that has looked cool, chic and sharp on movie stars, super models, and society beauties across the years. It is been worn by families on the beach and by dazzling beauties of stage and screen… Andy Warhol to Kate Moss, Picasso to the Duchess of Cambridge, Mick Jagger to Audrey Hepburn… In fact just about every legend in art, film, fashion and high society has been photographed a Breton Top.

Last Thursday we invited our totally gorgeous bloggers and trend-setters to celebrate with us and join us for a party at our Connaught Street ME+EM flagship store. They all wore a ME+EM Breton, styled their own unique way and we chatted, drank a glass – or two! – of fizz and ate the Breton cake! Thank you to this incredible list of inspirational women:

Kelly Eastwood – The London Chatter

Navaz Batliwa – Disney Roller Girl

Alyson Walsh – That’s Not My Age

Joanne Hegarty – the Stylist and the Wardrobe

Kat Farmer – Does My Bum Look 40

Vikki – Style & Minimalism

Chloe – Chloe Loves To Shop

Fran – The Fashion Lift

Annabel and Grace – Country Wives

Erna Leon – Mercer7

Christina – Chrisabella

Pascale – Style Mum

Victoria – Victoria Genevieve

We saw them wear the Forever Summer Breton looking super-sophisticated with leather trousers and an oversized white blazer. We saw our Iconic Breton fresh with denim and seriously upscale teamed with a gold button blazer and offset with a pale pink cross body clutch. Our Button Detail Breton was South-of-France chic worn with wedge espadrilles and off-white cropped jeans. And for cool femininity, our Forever Summer Breton was beyond elegant with a mid-length white skirt that was tempered by an edgy leather jacket.

Thank you to our bloggers, thank you to Chanel and thank you to one of the greatest tops out there! Happy Birthday to the always chic and always unique, Breton Top!
